US Legislators

This is a list of American legislators who have recently submitted a financial markets reform bill, sit on a Committee that is shaping OTC derivatives reform or have thrown their political weight into the debate. 

 

Spencer Bachus
Chairman, Financial Services Committee

Spencer Thomas Bachus III, American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing Alabama's 6th congressional district. The district includes the suburbs of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.

Chair, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic Policy

Sherrod Campbell Brown is the junior United States Senator from Ohio and a member of the Democratic Party. Before his election to the U.S. Senate, he was a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 13th congressional district from 1993 to 2007. He previously served as Ohio Secretary of State (1983-1991) and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives (1974–1982).

Ranking Republican of the Senate Agriculture Committee

Clarence Saxby Chambliss is the senior United States Senator from Georgia. He is a member of the Republican Party. In the 110th Congress, Chambliss serves as the ranking Republican member of the United States Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, chairing the committee during the 109th Congress (2005–2007).

Chair, Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management 

Michael Conaway is the United States House Representative for the 11th congressional district of Texas. As the chair of the subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, he oversees the subcommittee's jurisdiction of the Commodity Credit Corporation and risk management, which includes commodity exchanges. Michael also has experience as a CPA.

Bob Corker
Ranking Member of Subcommittee on Security and International Trade and Finance

Robert Phillips "Bob" Corker, Jr. is the junior United States Senator from Tennessee. Before his election to the Senate in 2006, he served as state commissioner from 1995 to 1996 and as mayor of Chattanooga from 2001 to 2005. He serves as the ranking member on the Senate Aging Committee.

Chairman, Senate Banking Committee

Christopher John Dodd is an American lawyer and Democratic Party politician serving as the senior United States Senator from Connecticut. Dodd served as general chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1995 to 1997. He serves as Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

 

Barney Frank
Ranking Member, Financial Services Committee

Barney Frank is the United States House Representative for Massachusetts's 4th congressional district since 1981. He is a member of the Democratic Party. In 2007, Frank became the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, the committee oversees the entire financial services industry, which includes the securities, insurance, banking, and housing industries.

 

Scott Garrett
Chairman, Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises

Scott Garrett is the United States House Representative for New Jersey's 5th congressional district. He is an advocate of tax relief and pro-growth economic policies. He currently serves as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, where he will be in charge of a subcommittee that has jurisdiction over the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Judd Gregg
Senate Banking Committee (appointed by Dodd to tackle derivatives regulation)

Judd Alan Gregg is a former Governor of New Hampshire and current United States Senator serving as ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. He is a member of the Republican Party and was a businessman and attorney in Nashua before entering politics. He currently serves as the Chair of the Public Advisory Board at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College.

Senator Tim Johnson has been a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs since 1997, and a member of Congress since 1987, focusing on public policies that ensure the safety and soundness of our nation's financial system. As international markets and technology have changed, he has supported efforts to modernize the regulatory system and make the regulatory framework more effective for regulators and consumers.

Carl Levin
Chair, Senate Committee on Armed Services

Carl Levin is the Democratic United States Senator from Michigan. Levin and Senator Jeff Merkley introduced an amendment in March 2010 based on the Protect our Recovery through Oversight of Proprietary (PROP) Trading Act that restricts proprietary trading by banks and large non-banks and prohibits conflicts of interests by underwriters.

Stephen Lynch
Sponsor of Lynch Amendment, Member of HFSC

Stephen F. Lynch is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Massachusetts's 9th congressional district since 2001. Prior to serving in the United States House of Representatives, Lynch was employed as an ironworker, lawyer, and served in both chambers of the Massachusetts General Court.

Jeffrey Merkley is a Senator from Oregon. Merkley was elected to his first Senate term in 2008. Along with Sen. Since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009, he has made financial regulation reform a top priority for his Administration. Stressing the need to pass tighter financial regulation reform in order to prevent a future economic recession similar to the one currently gripping global financial markets, President Obama had been driving Congress to pass financial regulation this year.

John Francis "Jack" Reed is the senior United States senator from Rhode Island and a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to his election, Reed was a three-term member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Rhode Island's 2nd congressional district from January 3, 1991 to January 3, 1997.

Richard Craig Shelby is the senior U.S. Senator from Alabama. Shelby began his legislative career as a member of the Alabama Senate in 1970, serving until 1978, when he was elected to the House of Representatives from the Tuscaloosa-based 7th District.
