Taxing Derivatives Gets Capitol Hill Airing

Some witnesses at a congressional hearing urged a sweeping overhaul of derivatives taxation to curb abuses by big businesses and the wealthy. But others raised concerns that tightening the rules too much could put the U.S. out of step with the world, and could restrict legitimate use of derivatives for hedging. While acknowledging that derivatives have been used to duck taxes, these experts also noted that middle-class investors increasingly are able to make use of the same basic strategies.
